Ah yes, 4/20—marijuana’s high holiday. This year we’re honoring the late & grate Bob Weir. His spirit lives on through the music he gave us and the beer we’ve just brewed.

The origins of 420 trace back to a group of high school friends in San Rafael, California, known as the Waldos. In the early 1970s, they used “420” as a secret code for meeting at 4:20 p.m. to search for a rumored abandoned cannabis crop. Though they never really found the stash, the term stuck—and through a twist of fate, it started spreading. A few years down the road, one of the Waldos became connected with the Grateful Dead and began joining them on tour. As the teens hung around Dead circles and rehearsals, the phrase started to catch on and spread through the larger counterculture scene.

The Grateful Dead, with their devoted following and deep roots in the psychedelic and free-spirited scene, played an unexpected but crucial role in 420’s rise. As Deadheads adopted the term, it traveled with them across the country, gaining momentum. It sort of became a universal term that all dead heads knew and used with each other.. Kind of like, if you know you know. Today, April 20th is celebrated globally as a day to embrace cannabis culture—and for many, especially Dead fans, it’s also a nod to a time when community, music, and a little bit of smoke brought people together in the most cosmic ways.

Whether you celebrate 4/20 or not, we invite you to spark up your taste buds with our newest hazy IPA: Weir Grateful. We used Citra hops in the whirlpool & dry hopped it with Amarillo and Simcoe hops.  Super Lemon Haze terpenes were added right before packaging for a dank, aromatic touch.  Expect a lot of citrus notes that will pair very well with the dank lemon terps!
